CORNING, N.Y., July 13, 2012 -- Corning Life Sciences, a segment of Corning Incorporated (NYSE: GLW), today announced the opening of a life sciences lab in Palo Alto, Calif. The new lab is housed within the existing Corning West Technology Center and will further expand Corning’s customer- and research-centric approach to developing leading products and technologies for the life sciences industry.
This newest Corning innovation lab offers customers and researchers from across industry and academia the life sciences solutions and onsite expertise needed to conduct successful cell-based, biochemical, and molecular biology assays. The new lab will help scientists improve research methods and results through collaborations, educational demonstrations, and tutorials. Since construction was completed in early May, the lab has hosted many leading West Coast biotech, chemical, and pharmaceutical companies, as well as academic institutions, including Stanford University.
“The Corning® Epic® technology, with its label-free and dynamic mass redistribution characterization capabilities, and local support from Corning’s new lab that helped get the experiments up and running, have been absolutely invaluable in our study of orphan G-protein receptors,” said Calvin Kuo, M.D., Ph.D., professor of medicine, Division of Hematology, Stanford University School of Medicine.
The lab is equipped with a full range of Corning’s advanced life sciences products and technologies, including a prototype of next generation Corning® Epic® technology. The lab and its staff will work closely with Corning’s other research and technical facilities, including the Axygen Automation Lab in Union City, Calif. Both labs will further engage customers, collaborate on next-generation life sciences research, and incorporate industry feedback into the Corning Life Sciences R&D portfolio.
The Axygen Automation Laboratory was established in 2011 to provide end users with firsthand experience with automation labware consumables made by Corning and its subsidiaries. The lab has been instrumental in furthering research results and product development efforts in the areas of genomics, Next Generation Sequencing, and lab automation.
The Corning West Technology Center (CWTC) was established in 2007 in Silicon Valley as a research and new-business-development hub interacting with industry, academia, and the venture capital and startup communities on the West Coast. CWTC, a unit of Corning’s Science and Technology Division, is staffed with scientists and engineers working on state-of-the-art applied research in touch technologies, high-speed fiber-optic interconnects, and advanced solid-state illumination packaging techniques.
“We are pleased to offer our customers, specifically those on the West Coast, with an additional technology resource for their life sciences research,” said Dr. Richard Eglen, vice president and general manager, Corning Life Sciences. “Innovation, R&D, and working closely with our customers are central to our business and the new lab is a testament to that commitment. We are excited about the potential this lab has for both Corning and our customers as we work together to identify new challenges and opportunities, develop new technologies, and advance research findings for greater benefit far beyond the laboratory walls.”
Through acquisition and internal R&D investment, Corning now offers a more comprehensive range of premium, innovative laboratory products and solutions for a wide spectrum of life science applications. Corning’s trusted, quality brands, backed by technical expertise, provide researchers with better ways to advance their research from the beginning of the process to the end. The family of brands includes Corning®, PYREX®, Costar®, Axygen®, Gosselin™ and Corning cellgro®.
Corning Life Sciences brings new and innovative laboratory technologies to researchers worldwide and helps customers succeed by providing innovative, high-quality products and services in the areas of polymer science, biochemistry and molecular biology, glass melting and forming, surface modification, and characterization science.
