LINE launches 'Translation Bot', a free Chinese/Japanese translation feature
Innovative IM app LINE enables users to overcome language barriers
10 Apr 2012

Hong Kong, 10 April 2012 LINE, the world's leading free calling and messaging service, has launched a new feature, Translation Bot, that enables its users to translate their messages from either simplified or traditional Chinese to Japanese, and vice-versa.

Using the feature is as easy as adding a Translation Bot account to users' existing contacts lists. Users simply need to check the 'People You May Know' option in the 'Add Friends' menu and the feature then appears in the user's contacts list, ready for use.

Once set up, users can add both their friends and the Translation Bot feature to their group chats. Any traditional or simplified Chinese text in the group chat messages is then automatically translated into Japanese.

"LINE is one of the world's leading free calling and messaging services, and we're continuously looking for ways to add useful innovations that make it even easier for LINE users to communicate," said Cha Ji-eun, senior manager, Business Office at NHN Corp., the makers of LINE. "Translation Bot represents a practical and cosmopolitan approach to help our users to build and maintain their global connections."

Cha added that the launch of Translation Bot is an industry-leading initiative, designed to benefit users all over Greater China.

Along with Translation Bot, LINE also recently launched its official greeting card app, LINE Card. The app became available to users on 28 March this year, and was ranked the most popular free app in Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand and Malaysia within two days of its release.

LINE Card enables users to send personalized messages of affection, gratitude, congratulations and so on, attractively packaged with a suitable, greeting card-style image of their choice. If they prefer, users can also select their own image and add it to the virtual card and LINE Card will automatically adjust and optimise the image. Users can also choose to send the greeting to multiple contacts, which is then sent via LINE's group chat feature to up to 100 recipients.

Since its launch in June 2011, LINE's popularity has grown dramatically. The app is now used by 28 million people worldwide. To complement the mobile device app, a desktop/laptop version of the app was launched for Windows and Mac users in March, together with a browser version for smart tablets. Users of the mobile device app can also use their LINE QR Code to set up the PC version without registering any additional details, for a seamless and integrated user experience.
